LOS ANGELES — A 26-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department died Monday after he crashed his vehicle while responding to a pursuit.
Sgt. Al Lopez, 47, was responding to a stolen vehicle pursuit around 5 a.m., officials told KTLA. The pursuit was called off due to high speeds and dangerous conditions shortly after Lopez left the police station, Sgt. Robert Connor told the publication.
Emergency crews responded to an intersection where Lopez’s vehicle crashed and paramedics began doing chest compressions on him until he was transported to a local hospital, according to a press release.
“By all indications, it looks like it may have been a medical emergency,” Sheriff Jim McDonnell told NBC4. “It is a tremendous loss to all of us.”
Lopez later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
An investigation is ongoing.
He is survived by a wife and two children.
