For a couple months now, Independence Police have employed a new GPS technology that curbs the number of high-speed pursuits.
Independence is the believed to be the first law enforcement agency in the Kansas City metro area to use the StarChase pursuit management system, which uses compressed air to shoot an adhesive tracking tag onto a fleeing suspect vehicle.
Officers and dispatchers then can track the vehicle in real time, but in a safer manner, and nab a suspect in a planned and coordinated effort.
“It can prevent or end pursuits,” said John Syme, IPD’s public information officer. “It’s another tool in our toolbox.
