High-speed police chases appear exciting on the movie screen. In real life, however, the players go to the morgue or the hospital, not the dressing room.
Nationwide, such pursuits kill hundreds of people a year. Making matters worse, most of those who flee police committed minor offenses and then made bad decisions to run.
A new GPS tracking system already used by a small number of law enforcement agencies could reduce or eliminate dangerous police pursuits by enabling officers to track fleeing vehicles with in-car computers. Police agencies in northwest Ohio should seriously consider buying and using this technology.
