Police pursuits are one of the most unpredictable activities for law enforcement and will always bring an element of danger to the police and community.
Most pursuits are triggered by traffic violations like DUI or reckless driving or by felonies like armed robbery, assault or a stolen vehicle. It’s estimated that up to half of all pursuits in the United States end in a collision. Often, officers must put themselves in harm’s way to protect innocent citizens from a dangerous fleeing suspect.
Here are five wild pursuits caught on dash cam video:
1. Stolen dump truck in Utah (4:28)
The police in this video use multiple units and spike strips to stop a large construction vehicle.
2. Drunk driver crashes into cruiser in Milwaukee (1:20)
A suspected drunk driver reported going the wrong way on city streets enters the highway and reached 109 mph before crashing into the median wall, where he went airborne and collided with a deputy’s cruiser.
3. Wrong way driver hits cruiser head-on (3:40)
An officer responding to a call of a vehicle driving the wrong way on the highway locates the vehicle, which slams into the police vehicle head on (at 2:25)
4. Texas cop pursues wrong-way driver with small children in the car (6:42)
The officer pursues the fleeing driver at high speeds down highways and through parking lots. As the suspect is apprehended, other officers retrieve the children.
5. Georgia police apprehend three burglars (4:32)
The suspect vehicle blows through intersections, passes a school bus and repeatedly crosses a grassy median, all at high speeds.
BONUS: PIT maneuver flips a wrong-way driver (2:42)
The driver intentionally failed to stop for troopers’ lights and sirens and repeatedly drove against traffic. The Utah Highway Patrol trooper authorized to use a PIT maneuver to stop her vehicle hit her SUV twice, causing it to overturn. Troopers say the driver took off but was tackled by multiple officers.
